My Unforgettable Birthday Celebration in Bali: A Heartfelt Day at Villa Rosita
By: Shevaun Sekhri
Of all my birthdays, the one I celebrated in Bali stands out as perhaps the most memorable. It was January 29, 2021, and I awoke in our Bali home to a sight that instantly filled my morning with warmth. The house staff, with their incredible kindness and artistic touch, had created a ‘Happy Birthday’ flower arrangement that went beyond simple decoration. It was a thoughtful display, not just flowers, but balloons as well, laid out across the ground in a spectrum of colours, a complete rainbow. Their dedication to making the day special was evident in every petal and every balloon, a gesture that spoke volumes about their care, and it truly touched me.
My delight only grew as the day unfolded, proving the celebration at Rosita was just beginning. After greeting my parents, I was asked to prepare in traditional Balinese attire. This was for a prayer ceremony, arranged specifically for my special day. Living here, I’ve come to consider the staff as an extension of my family, and this careful consideration, the effort taken to ensure my birthday in Bali was as profound as possible, resonated deeply within me, filling me with a profound sense of gratitude. The Balinese birthday traditions often focus on prayers and religious value, emphasizing gratitude for life and self-reflection, rather than just cakes and candles. This spiritual emphasis certainly shone through in the morning’s arrangements.
Following the prayer, which I shared with my family and several members of our dedicated staff, the Village priest led us from the black sand beach that stretches before Villa Rosita. The feeling of the unique dark grains beneath my feet as we walked towards the Bale was grounding, a gentle transition to the next part of the celebration. A Bale, an open pavilion commonly found in Balinese compounds, serves as a versatile space for family gatherings, ceremonies, or simply for rest, its design encouraging interaction with nature and community. There, I was met with an astonishing sight: almost two dozen village children, their faces bright with expectation. This moment, seeing their angelic expressions and wide, clear smiles, elevated the day from wonderful to truly extraordinary. It was the highlight, a burst of pure, unadulterated joy.
The act of sharing food with these children brought such immense pleasure. My family’s businesses are built on the principle of delighting in others’ enjoyment of a meal, a drink, or a stay, and witnessing their happiness as we shared a meal was a powerful affirmation of that philosophy. Their laughter and the eager way they accepted the food were infectious. I will always carry the memory of that shared meal. And to this day, every January 29th, I receive a video of those same village children singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me. It is a blessing I recognize and cherish, something I will never take for granted. This continued connection, the thoughtful remembrance from the children and the village, speaks volumes about the enduring bonds formed here.
As daylight faded and the evening settled in, the day concluded with fireworks. While visually striking against the night sky, they were, in a way, the least impactful part of the day. The true moments that left their mark were the quiet ones of togetherness, the loving words exchanged, and the heartfelt blessings received from the Village elders. Walking through our village, Tegal Besar, as the final sparks of light dissolved into the darkness, I felt a deep reminder of the many blessings in my life. The profound connections forged, the genuine warmth extended by the people around me, and the unique spirit of this place all contributed to an understanding that our stays in Bali bring something truly special into my existence.
This birthday in Bali, particularly the celebration at Rosita, transcended any previous birthday party. It wasn’t just a day; it was a collection of moments that spoke to the heart of what matters: human connection, unfeigned generosity, and the deep satisfaction that comes from sharing joy. The thoughtful gestures, from the rainbow of flowers at dawn to the innocent smiles of the children and the solemn blessings of the elders, wove together a tapestry of memories that remain vivid and cherished. It was a day that underscored the richness of life lived in community, a testament to the warmth of Bali and its people.
