The rivers of Indonesia are choking, and a small team of warriors is fighting back

Boutique Villas Bali is proud to support Sungai Watch and their Run for Rivers campaign. Here’s why this work matters, not just for the ocean, but for the people who live alongside these rivers every single day.

In March 2026, our General Manager sat down with the Sungai Watch team at Finns Beach Club. The conversation was straightforward and the numbers were stark. Over four million kilograms of plastic waste collected from rivers across Bali and Java. More than 400 floating trash barriers installed. A team of 150 river warriors working every single day.

But behind those numbers is a human story that doesn’t get told nearly enough. This is not primarily a story about beaches and tourism. It is a story about families. About children drinking contaminated water. About fishermen whose nets come up full of plastic instead of fish. About communities whose rivers, the same rivers their grandparents bathed in, fished in, and depended on, have become open conduits for waste.

A river is not just scenery. For millions of Indonesians, it is a source of drinking water, a means of food, and the thread that holds a community together. When it fills with plastic, everything downstream suffers.

The human cost of plastic pollution

Indonesia’s rivers carry a burden that most visitors to Bali never see. Java alone holds 90 of the world’s 1,000 most polluted rivers. The consequences of this are not abstract. Plastic waste in waterways contaminates drinking water sources for communities that have no alternative supply. Children play near rivers laced with toxins leaching from decomposing plastic. Families who rely on river fish as their primary protein source find that catch increasingly contaminated.

Flooding, already a serious risk in Indonesia’s rainy season, is made dramatically worse when rivers are clogged with plastic debris. Drainage systems fail. Low-lying communities are inundated. Homes are damaged. Livelihoods are lost. The people who suffer most from plastic pollution are rarely the ones who created the most of it.

There is also a mental health dimension that goes unspoken. To watch the river your family has lived beside for generations become a rubbish dump is a particular kind of grief. It is the loss of something that was once clean, beautiful, and sustaining. Sungai Watch understands this. Their work is not just environmental, it is an act of restoration for the communities these rivers run through.

How Sungai Watch actually works

Founded in 2020 by siblings Gary, Kelly, and Sam Bencheghib, Sungai Watch built their model around a simple but brilliant insight: intercept plastic in rivers before it reaches the ocean. Not on beaches after the damage is done. Not in the ocean where recovery is almost impossible. In rivers, where the problem is still manageable.

The floating trash barriers are the backbone of the system, permanent infrastructure maintained by local river warriors who remove trapped waste on a regular schedule. That waste is then transported to sorting facilities, separated by material type, and either recycled or passed to Sungai Design, their sister organisation that upcycles river plastic into contemporary Balinese furniture.

The model is self-reinforcing. Every piece of furniture sold by Sungai Design funds more river cleanups. Every dollar donated removes more plastic. Every barrier installed protects more coastline. And every community member employed as a river warrior gains a fair-wage green job that gives them a direct stake in the health of their local environment.

Crucially, Sungai Watch measures everything. Monthly reports track kilograms collected, barriers maintained, and cleanups completed. When they say a dollar removes a kilogram of plastic, they can prove it, verified through their barrier technology and community cleanup data. This is not environmental activism on good intentions alone. It is systematic, measurable, and scalable.

Run for Rivers 2026, join the movement

Right now, Sungai Watch co-founders Gary, Kelly, and Sam are running 1,200 kilometres from Bali to Java, mapping polluted rivers, meeting local leaders, and raising $1 million to remove 1 million kilograms of plastic from Indonesia’s waterways.

Every USD $1 donated removes 1 kg of plastic from an Indonesian river. Donations are tax-deductible in the US (via their 501(c)3 non-profit, Make A Change World Inc) and 100% of funds go directly to river cleanup work in Indonesia.

You can run with them at one of their on-ground events, donate to the campaign, or simply share the story. Every contribution, however small, creates a direct, verified impact on the rivers and communities of Indonesia.

Why Boutique Villas Bali is supporting this

We have lived and worked on this island for over a decade. The rivers near our villas, the coastline our guests wake up to every morning, the fishing communities along Bali’s East Coast, these are not backdrop. They are the reason we are here.

When we sat with the Sungai Watch team in March, we were not there as tourists to the issue. We were there as a business that understands, in a very practical way, that the health of this island and the health of our business are inseparable. Clean rivers protect the coastline Villa Rosita overlooks. Healthy waterways sustain the communities our team comes from. Environmental responsibility is not a value we add to our brand, it is something we owe to the place that has given us so much.

Sungai Watch does not need our endorsement. They have already removed four million kilograms of waste and installed 400 barriers with or without us. What they need is to raise awareness and to get sustained financial support to expand into Java, where the problem is even more acute, and to continue maintaining the infrastructure they have already built.

How you can help

If you are staying with us, ask about reducing single-use plastics during your stay, it is a small change with a genuine cumulative effect. Consider supporting Sungai Watch directly through the Run for Rivers campaign. Or simply share the story with someone who cares about Indonesia and the communities that call it home.

The rivers of Bali and Java are not lost. But they need people to show up for them, with barriers, with volunteers, with resources, and with the kind of sustained attention that only comes when enough people understand what is at stake.

Support Run for Rivers, $1 = 1kg of plastic removed

Gary, Kelly and Sam are running 1,200km across Indonesia right now to raise $1 million for river cleanups. Every dollar is verified, every kilogram tracked. 100% of funds go directly to Sungai Watch’s work in Indonesia.
