Help rebuild Bali’s coral reef, a day trip unlike anything else

Just minutes from Villa Rosita, one of Bali’s most extraordinary eco-experiences is quietly rebuilding the ocean — and you can be part of it.

Bali is famous for its beauty above water. But beneath the surface of the Bali Sea, just a short drive from Villa Rosita along the East Coast, something remarkable is happening. A team of marine conservationists is rebuilding a coral reef, fragment by fragment, and they’re inviting visitors to join them.

Reef Restoration Bali, run by the Livingseas Foundation in Padangbai, is the largest coral reef restoration project on the island. It is open to everyone, families, divers, non-swimmers, children, and curious travellers who simply want to do something meaningful with a morning in Bali.

Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea – and more than half of the world’s reefs have disappeared since 1950. Here, you can help turn that around.

Why this matters

Coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor yet support around a quarter of all marine life. They protect coastlines, sustain local fisheries, and create the vibrant underwater world that draws divers and snorkellers to Bali in the first place. But they are disappearing, due to rising ocean temperatures, pollution, irresponsible tourism, and decades of damage that has proven very difficult to reverse.

What makes the Padangbai project different is that it is genuinely hands-on. This is not a guided snorkel where you observe from a distance. You are actively planting coral, learning the science, and contributing to a living reef that will grow for decades after you leave.

What you can do

Coral Snorkel Tour

Join a floating pontoon, learn restoration techniques, plant coral, then snorkel the reef you’ve helped build. Perfect for families and all ages.

Coral Workshops

A meaningful group experience for families, friends, or corporate teams. Minimum 10 people. Learn, build, and make a real impact together.

Conservation Dives

For certified divers and beginners alike. A two-tank dive where you plant coral directly underwater and witness the biodiversity you’re protecting.

How coral restoration actually works

The team at Reef Restoration Bali use metal structures called reef stars – coated in sand and designed to mimic the natural reef surface. Coral fragments, harvested sustainably from nearby natural sites, are carefully attached to these structures and lowered onto the seabed. Over the following months and years, the coral grows and spreads, building a new section of living reef.

Within a year, your planted coral will have grown larger than your hand. Within three years, it will look entirely natural – indistinguishable from the reef that has always been there. It is one of the most tangible, lasting things a visitor to Bali can do.

HOW TO PROTECT THE REEF WHILE YOU’RE THERE

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen – mineral-based only, no chemical UV filters that damage coral.
  • Be mindful with fins when snorkelling – accidental contact causes real damage.
  • Avoid single-use plastics – even small changes make a measurable difference at scale.
  • Consider supporting the Livingseas Foundation directly if you want your contribution to go further.

From Villa Rosita to Padangbai

Villa Rosita sits on Bali’s East Coast – one of the island’s most peaceful and underexplored stretches of coastline. Padangbai, home to the reef restoration site, is a short and scenic drive away, making it one of the most natural half-day excursions from the villa.

Our team can arrange private transport and help you book the experience that suits your group – whether that’s a morning snorkel tour for the family, a workshop for a larger group, or a pair of conservation dives before lunch. Come back to the villa in the afternoon, take a dip in the infinity pool, and know that somewhere beneath the Bali Sea, a small piece of reef is growing with your name on it.

Staying at Villa Rosita?

Our team can arrange private transfers to Padangbai and help you book your reef restoration experience. It’s one of our favourite day trips from the villa – meaningful, memorable, and unlike anything else on the island.
